From Bad to Worse?

Postby sheltie on Sun Feb 22, 2009 6:49 am

I had my right Achilles tendon operated on in early November '08. During the operation, a bone spur was also removed from below (and interfering with) my AT. The recovery since the operation has been extremely good and quick - until a week or so ago.

I've been taking PT three times a week for about six weeks. In the last week or so, if I stand in one place for more than a few minutes, I experience a sharp pain on the bottom of my heel, as if I'm standing on a golf ball. I went fly fishing the other day and could only be there for an hour because of the pain.

Obviously I'm not a doctor, but my podiatrist just had a baby and won't be available to a couple more weeks to ask any questions. I seem to be experiencing many of the symtoms of PF and would like to "cut them off at the pass", so to speak. Currently, I'm wearing orthotics that were prescribed for me pre-surgery, but which I hadn't worn since surgery. It may be my imagination, but hopefully it may feel minimally better wearing them.

I'm open to suggestions as to treatment. Surgery - again - is not something that I would look forward to.

Sheltie,
I would definately wear your orthotics. Have you tried, motrin, ice or stretching? That tends to help a lot of people. It may just be referred pain from healing from your other surgery. I had pf surgery almost three weeks ago and I am having at times discomfort at different parts of my foot but am told it is the normal part of healing. I would bet your doctor has someone covering for her and it would be in your best interest to have it looked at. Good luck and keep me updated!

Thanks for the reply Lynn.

I've been taking hydrocodone for my back for years, so that also covers the rest of my body (when it works). As far as ice and stretching, I do both on a daily basis as tht is also part of the recovery from surgery regimen.

I've been wearing my orthotics again for a few days and the PF (or whatever it is) problem "seems" to be lessening. I don't know if that's because I WANT it to or if it's real. Another few days should tell me. Incidentally, my physical therapist feels that my current problem is related to PF and she has added some extra treatment and exercises (mainly stretching at this point) for me.
