knowing when to see a doctor vs. "self-diagnosis"

Postby Jennevere on Thu Apr 09, 2009 2:28 pm

I am glad to find this forum!

About 2 weeks I starting having pain in the arch of my right foot. I might describe it as being more on the "side" of the arch, then completely on the bottom of my foot. My foot is sore with walking, and occasionally I have a terribly sharp pain which I'd describe to be like a cramp.

Prior to this pain I: jogged (on asphalt), did a fitness class with lots of jogging, jumping, jumping jacks, etc, biked. I have been leisurely training for a ladies' triathlon.

My fitness teacher has told me to stop jogging and her class. My foot does not see to worsen with cycling.

I have been a very good girl for 2 weeks (occasional anti-inflammatories as I remember), ice before bed but no improvement.

My endorphins need a severe boost at this point as does my heart rate!!!! Swimming might be a substitute...

How do I know when I should see a doctor? Does this sound like PF to you all?

Thanks, Jenny

I experience the exact same pain. AFter running for about 10 minutes, I start to feel an intermittent sharp pain in my right arch. Stretching helps, but running brings it back. I damaged it worse last night running, and now walking is painful. Biking, like you said, does not make it worse. The pain is also there for me if I stand on my toes, or do calf raises. I'm thinking it's time to see a doctor.

Both of you sound as though you have moderately displaced the metatarsals relative to the tarsals. Find a chiropractor that has specialized extremities training and certification. The abbreviation for the certification is "CCES". Cycling to keep up some level of activity and training while you work to resolve this is a good idea. Swimming works too.
