Electric Pulses that Kill the Nerve in the Foot?

Postby jennybean on Sat Sep 27, 2008 10:55 pm

My aunt told me that she was looking into getting a experimental type of electric therapy that actually uses electrical impulses to kill the nerve endings and end pain since the nerve is dead. Has anyone else heard of this? I tried to find it and I am not having any luck, but it I think she may be mistaking it for ESWT which is shock wave therapy... someone please let me know if you have heard of this!

I sincerely hope NO ONE will use the treatment if it actually kills nerve endings in the foot. Nerves DO re-grow, about a millimeter a day. Not being able to feel part of your feet will cause balance issues, and increases the chances of a trip & fall accident. I don't recommend it. It is more likely that she is considering shockwave therapy, which has limited results with major inconvenience.

My podiatrist has recommeded this procedure. The device is called a podiatherm RF generator. My understanding of the procedure it involves isolating the nerve branch associated with the pain injecting medication into that one nerve branch. It takes 3 to 4 weeks to determine if the procedure is successful. I was told the procedure has a 92% success rate. I'm trying to find out if anyone has had this procedure and if so what are the drawbacks.

Hi all, I am new to the board. I am doing research for my husband which has it very bad. And most insurances don't cover feet problems. So I been looking to the shock treatment and such as well. If I find anything I will post it here as well. But at this time I haven't been able to find much on it. His work prob. won't allow for alot of down time but not sure on it. So a non-invasive procedure would be great if we can get some feedback on these things. Thank you all so much for you input on this site. This IS the most I have found out about it. But I just know we gotta do something. He is in sooo much pain.

God bless, Covered

I have not had this done on my foot, but have had it done on my back and let me say that for someone who has tried and failed with other methods to relieve pain... this is a God-send. I was able to get off heavy duty medication that I could not function without and had been taking around the clock for years. Yes, 'Some' nerves do regenerate, but not all do and it takes a long time for this to occur. If they do and some of the pain returns, you determine if it is at a level to justify having the procedure again. This saved my Quality of Life. Anyone living with chronic pain can understand.
