A cast as treatment for plantar faciitis

Postby karlp on Sun May 17, 2009 6:02 pm

My doctor said that my plantar faciitis is completely torn and surgery is not possible. He has put my foot into a cast for three weeks and after that time it may require another three week cast. Following that he is talking the use of a walking boot. My question is whether anyone else has had a similar experience and do the casts solve the problem? Thanks

Mine is also torn and I have had my cast on for 4weeks now with 2 more to go. The pain is better but not gone completely. Will be interested to see what happens when it come off!

I go back to the doctor after 3 weeks with the cast on. As with you the pain has lessened but is still there. I have a walking cast. What type cast do you have and what restrictions did the doctor place on you? No walking or limited walking, etc. I have been pretty active even with the cast such as I still drive my full size van but I can't fit into my Mustang. Let me know if the problem ever gets completely solved.

I Have had PF for about 9 months now.The pain is excruciating.I had a cortisone injection about a month ago,and
the pain from the injection was the worst that i have ever experienced in my life,if anything, the injection has
made my PF worse.I have tried heel inserts, heel arches but with no success at al. i bought a night splint from the
internet, and that hasnt been successful either.Im now referred to a muscular skeletal specialist..any body got
any ideas what they will do ? at the end of my tether here

An update on my PF cure. I had a cast on for six weeks and now will be wearing a detachable boot for three more weeks to be followed by three weeks of physical therapy. My orthopedic surgeon says that I will be then cured with no pain. He did say however that I would need some orthopedic inserts for my shoes. After the six weeks of the cast the pain is almost completely gone now and appears to be getting better each day. There have been no surgeries, no injections, etc ,only the cast and boot. So it appears that PF due to a torn legiment (or whatever tears) can be successfully cured. My suggestion is to find an orthopedic surgeon who uses this technique.
